Trip Summary
If you’re looking for a two-week adventure full of Morocco’s highlights, this trip is for you! From sacred sites and bustling medinas to the expanse of the Sahara Desert, you’ll be hitting all the popular hotspots and stopping for air in some of the country’s best kept secrets. Explore the Roman ruins of Volubilis, find the cultural heart of Morocco in Fes el Bali, road trip through everchanging scenery (look out for Barbary apes and nomadic shepherds along the way), ride a camel towards a desert sunset, hike through lush palm groves in Todra Valley, discover popular filming locations in World Heritage-listed Ait Benhaddou, kick back and unwind in seaside Essaouria and top it all off with the street food bazaars and performers in Djemaa el-Fna Square in Marrakech.
Why You’ll love this trip
- Learn about history and culture from a local tour guide and feel like you’ve travelled back to the Middle Ages in the labyrinthine medina of bustling Fes.
- Stay in a traditional Amazigh homestay high in the Atlas Mountains and enjoy a homecooked meal of Moroccan favourites, learning about the culture and traditions of an Indigenous population who stand the test of time.
- Trek through the dramatic red dunes of the Sahara Desert on a camel’s back, experiencing an unforgettable sunset – then stay under a blanket of North African stars in a desert camp.
- Kick back in the coastal town of Essaouira and discover the winding laneways at your own pace. Then, meet a local fisherman by the seaside and learn about his life and this traditional practice.
- Explore the old medina of Marrakech with a knowledgeable local guide, discovering the myriad of sights, smells and sounds along zigzagging lanes. Then, discover the colourful chaos of Djemaa el-Fna Square.
Is this trip right for you?
- Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be extremely high in Morocco (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water.
- Ramadan is an annual month-long festival, during which travel can be a rewarding cultural experience, however some regular services may not be available during the day, such as restaurants or cafes, and occasionally travel can be disrupted by events. Your leader will adjust the itinerary accordingly, but please consider this when selecting your travel dates. You’ll find dates and further information in the ‘Climate and seasonal information’ section of the Essential Trip Information.

Special information
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
Please be aware that some of our travellers in Casablanca are being approached by locals offering excursions before their Intrepid trip commences. This has been particularly prevalent in and around the hotels used by Intrepid. These guides are in no way connected to Intrepid Travel, and we cannot guarantee the safety or quality standards of their tours. We strongly advise customers against joining any tour offered by unauthorised guides.

Special information:
There will be 5 to 6 hours of walking today, but this is an integral part of experiencing Fes to the fullest.
Today’s experience is also filled with shopping experiences at a few carefully selected places. If shopping is not your thing, don’t worry! Discuss other options with your tour leader beforehand and they’ll accommodate you. You may have some free time to explore at your own pace, but keep in mind that your leader won’t be able to set a meeting point inside the medina as it can be quite challenging to navigate the old alleyways. If you decide to explore on your own, you can easily catch up with the group at the hotel.

The camp is simple, with bedding and basic toilet facilities. The blankets are warm enough for most travellers between April and October, but you may like to bring your own sleeping sheet and an extra jumper from November to March if you prefer. Electricity is not available in the camp, so it’s important to come prepared with phones, cameras and everything else you may need fully charged.
The camel ride is a highlight for most in Morocco, but if you’d prefer not to, it’s possible to walk alongside the caravan on the sand instead. The walk takes about an hour and is not very demanding, so you will manage with just a basic level of fitness.

Special information:
The optional walk around Todra Gorge takes place over rocky terrain and the first part is more challenging as it winds over a steady incline. Going back down may be slippery, especially after a rainy day. Please be prepared with good walking shoes or boots and ensure you have a moderate fitness level.

If you feel uncomfortable with the walk through the villages, you can opt to ride a mule instead or a car may be organized at an extra cost if you let your tour leader know in advance. You may choose to bring sturdy boots if you prefer but a pair of good walking shoes with rigid and grippy soles will be sufficient.
Facilities at the homestay are shared (both the bathroom and sleeping arrangements) but cosy, comfortable and definitely a better way to immerse yourself in the culture than a hotel.
